Bligh calls for nurses to stay on - Australia/Aboriginal/Sex Trade
25/3/08
Queensland Premier Anna Bligh says she hopes “common sense will prevail” and nurses will not pull out of the Torres Strait over security concerns. The state Government has been accused of failing to act on three reports warning of safety problems as far back as 2005 after The Australian this month revealed a nurse was raped at Mabuiag Island on February 5. The alleged assault took place while the nurse was in bed at her residence after her attacker entered the property through a door with a faulty lock. The Queensland Nurses Union, which last year raised security concerns amid a spate of assaults on nurses on Thursday Island, has threatened to pull its members out unless broken locks, security lighting and alarms are fixed at 11 clinics across the region.
