The Northern Territory’s lead Aboriginal legal aid agency has called for takeaway alcohol sales to be banned for all citizens three days a week, in an effort to tackle the Territory’s chronic drinking culture. North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency principal lawyer Glen Dooley agreed the idea was aimed primarily at Aboriginal drinkers, but said regular across-the-board closures of takeaway sales would make a difference to non-indigenous drinkers as well. “We’re saying there should be several full days of shutdown every week on takeaway sales,” Mr Dooley said. “A lot of people who buy alcohol buy it daily. They don’t store it, they don’t keep it in fridges and they hurt each other. We all need a break from it. It’d be a real chance to think about how we consume grog.”
