Australians remain strongly opposed to construction of a pulp mill in Tasmania as the company responsible, Gunns, struggles to find a backer prepared to finance the controversial project. A new poll of more than 1000 people by analysts Essential Research found almost two-thirds (61%) of the public opposed the mill planned for the Tamar Valley. Despite the approval granted by federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett, Labor voters were 65% against, compared to 52% of Coalition supporters. The poll, commissioned by activist organisation GetUp, follows the resignation of Tasmanian premier Paul Lennon and a decision by the ANZ Bank to withdraw its involvement as financier following a public outcry.
