Drunken female party animals are inundating NSW hospital emergency departments in record numbers. NSW Health has released new figures which show an overall 59 per cent increase in alcohol-related emergency department cases from 2000 to 2007. The biggest increase in hospital visits was among so-called ladettes - the 18- to 24-year-old group of females with a thirst for grog to match their male rivals - whose numbers increased by 200 per cent.
Police step up grog war
Heath Gilmore; 28/9/08
Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione is preparing to open a new front in his ongoing battle against 24-hour pub trading and the easy availability of grog. He has revealed the NSW Police Force commissioned researchers to investigate links between crime and extended trading hours, clusters of late trading venues and the availability of alcohol. Mr Scipione has spoken out strongly against binge drinking in the past six months since police commissioners from Australia and New Zealand took a unified stand against alcohol-related violence. With voluntary pub trading-hour curfews and lockouts in place in the Sydney CBD, Manly and Parramatta as well as mandatory conditions enforced in Newcastle, police are increasing pressure on alcohol outlets.
