Academic urges action on bill of rights for Aborigines
Pia Akerman and Natasha Robinson; 19/4/08
An Aboriginal academic will call for an indigenous treaty or constitutional reform at the 2020 Summit to remove the possibility of the Racial Discrimination Act being suspended. The Howard government suspended the act to implement the Northern Territory intervention into Aboriginal communities. Peter Buckskin, dean of the University of South Australia’s Indigenous College of Education and Research, said he would push for legal recognition of indigenous rights. “We’re signatories to a whole range of international covenants and declarations, and we just ignore them,” said Professor Buckskin, also co-chair of Reconciliation SA.
